Price: $4.99 (US)
If you’ve been waiting to conquer the D’aarg again, then wait no longer in the latest Soldner-X2 DLC. At only $4.99, you’re going to get a lot of bang for your buck. You’re given 3 brand-new stages which brings the current total to 10, 13 new challenges and 11 new trophies to earn. One other subtlety you may notice is the use of background pictures rather than bland color schemes on the Challenges, Awards, Options, High Score and Stage Select screens. Also, secret keys return bringing that total up to 50 for the 10 stages. There is also a secret stage that is only playable from a few challenges.
The new stages and challenges are more challenging than the base game. I would recommend doing the three levels first before you attempt the challenges since there are more rewards. Some of the challenges can give you quite an advantage on the battlefield (i.e. having the shock wave available from the start of the game or having your limit attack and shock wave with you after you use a continue). If you do intend to complete all the challenges, expect to spend a lot of time playing levels 8-10 over and over. More enemies on the screen means that you must take advantage of your ship’s small hitbox especially on the higher difficulties because more shots are being fired at you. The boss fights are longer (especially Level 9) and require just a bit more patience. The music is fantastic once again and suits the atmosphere.
I think that the ending wraps up the game pretty well and I don’t think anymore DLC is needed. If they were to add more DLC, make more challenges. The challenges add a ton of replay value to the game and most are creative. Ten levels are enough and I think that EastAsiaSoft would rather create a third game by its own merit. I would recommend this DLC for those looking for more out of this game and for those looking for a good challenge.
