Explodemon review

Explosion Man for the 360 turned out to be a big success. It is now PSN’s turn with the release of Explodemon, a platformer by Curve Studios. You explode in order to reach higher places, kill enemies and move objects.
You play as Explodemon, a character who has to save the world from Absorbemon and the coalition named the Vortex. You traverse three worlds, each comprised of four levels apiece. Currency through the game is collected by picking up little triangular units that are plentiful throughout the level. You also earn this currency by killing enemies and exploding boxes. This currency is used to level up Explodemon’s abilities such as more powerful explosions or reducing the time you explode.
The gameplay is simple; you press one button (the O button) to explode. There is a meter that on the right that refills once you explode. When it fills up again, you can explode again. Special rechargers can decrease the time required for a recharge. There are also things that suck away Explodemon’s explode ability thus adding to the complexity of the game. Timing is crucial if you want to nail some of the game’s puzzles. They may seem hard at first, but think about it for a while and may take several tries but eventually you will get it.
Speaking of timing, you are timed on each level. Each level has a par time to beat. As of this writing, I have only beaten the par time on one level. There is no way to tell how much time you have left or how much has elapsed until you reach the end of the level. You are also ranked, from F to S. A combination of speed and acquiring the 10 Explodicons throughout each level is essential to achieving an S rank. So if you intend to S rank and/or par every level, be prepared to replay each level over and over.
For $9.99, this game has a lot to offer. I recommend this game to those who enjoyed Explosion Man or those who flat out enjoy platformers. You are actually forced to think in order to traverse the game’s levels and many games can’t say that. This is the first game in a while that I have really enjoyed and I think you will enjoy it too.
