Castle Crashers review

Castle Crashers is a game in the beat-up style genre. You can play as one of four starting knights: red, blue, green or yellow. Each knight has a special ability related to magic; red is lightning, green is poison, blue is ice and yellow is fire. The player kills enemies and earns XP every time an enemy is hit. This XP is used to level up your character. The character level determines what weapons that can be wielded. Also the character can have other animals that go with him. These animals help the main character by assisting in a number of different categories such as higher defense or more XP gained per enemy hit.

Progressing through the story unlocks other characters in the game to play as such as a King or one of the enemies you've defeated. One the PS3 version, insane mode is unlocked once you beat the game in normal mode. In insane mode, enemies are tougher thus requiring a little strategy because you can die in a few hits if you aren't careful enough. The bosses are not that difficult, but getting to the bosses can be, especially on insane mode. I love the gameplay overall though.

Online is hit or miss for me. There have been times where I've played with other players seamlessly; other times it seems that no one can be found and/or it's hard to connect to anyone. Online modes include arena battle versus other players, playing in other people's single player game to help them out or volleyball. Volleyball is PS3 exclusive.

This game is a must if you like old-school beat-em up games like Double Dragon. Simple, yet fun. Challenging but not overbearing. Have fun with this game. I sure did.
