Playstation Home was released a couple weeks ago and the New Xbox experience now too long before Home. Each of the two have their own version of avatars. Of course with the release of the Wii came their version of avatars or Miis. Now that each system has their own avatars, I felt compelled to do a comparison for each. These are my own opinions and are not those of Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo. With that said, here goes:
Nintendo Miis
With the new generation came something innovative. These avatars, or Miis, were made to look like you (or at least close to it). They are ok but looking back now, they look a little cartoony, which of course is the demographic and style of games Nintendo currently goes for. Also we were promised a lot of games that would make use of said Miis. There have been some but I would like to see more. Get creative. Wouldn't it be interesting to see your Miis interact with Zelda or Mario?
Microsoft avatars
These were created and coincided with the New Xbox Experience (NXE for short). To me, these seemed like a hybrid of the Miis and Sony avatars. They have exactly the same Mii look but unlike them, they can be customized with clothing. For now there are a couple games for these avatars (1 vs 100 for example) and currently they aren't supported in any disk-based game. We'll see what hapens in the near future with them.
Sony avatars
With the release of Playstation Home came Sony's avatars. These are a complete contrast to the aforementioned Microsoft and Nintendo versions. These look by far the close to what you actually look like. The other two look like they are just geometric shapes put together. Sony's version looks like real people. You can fully customize your avatar head to toe with clothing (Granted there isn't much right now) as well as other important customizations (i.e. facial). I think there are more customizations here then with Microsoft's avatars (although they are a close second) and Nintendo's aren't even close. As far as I know, Sony will only keep these in Home. I do think that Sony will include unlockable content for your avatar in upcoming games. If Microsoft wanted to, they could put unlockable content for their avatars in games as well. Nintendo probably won't. We see how this shakes out.
Overall, I like Sony's avatars better. Nintendo's Miis are used in more games but the other two companies' versions are far more customizable. Everyone should be happy that they have something like this. It took a while for Sony's to come, but they didn't disappoint.
